B-BBEE Verification: Are You Ready for Your Next Audit?

By Transcend | 1 October 2026

Businesses invest significant resources in Skills Development, Enterprise and Supplier Development, Socio-Economic Development, Employment Equity and other transformation initiatives. The B-BBEE verification process should ultimately provide an accurate reflection of these investments and the organisation’s transformation efforts.

A B-BBEE Verification certificate should therefore be more than a compliance document. It should reflect the investment made by the business in transformation and support the organisation’s broader commercial and strategic objectives, while contributing meaningfully to transformation in South Africa.

A successful B-BBEE verification is not just about submitting a scorecard and supporting documents. It is about ensuring that your data, evidence and processes tell the same story, and that potential gaps are identified before they become verification findings that may delay the verification process and the issuing of the B-BBEE certificate.

What Happens During a B-BBEE Verification?

The B-BBEE verification process involves the assessment of the information and supporting evidence submitted by the measured entity.

1. Submission of Information

The measured entity submits its B-BBEE information, supporting documentation and calculations to the B-BBEE Rating Agency.

The information submitted forms the basis for the verification assessment and should therefore be complete, accurate and supported by the relevant evidence.

2. Evidence Assessment

The B-BBEE Rating Agency reviews the evidence provided in support of the organisation’s B-BBEE scorecard.

This may include information relating to:

  • Ownership
  • Management Control
  • Skills Development
  • Enterprise and Supplier Development
  • Socio-Economic Development
  • Youth Employment Service (YES)

The supporting evidence needs to align with the calculations reflected on the scorecard.

3. Sampling and Queries

As part of the verification process, the Rating Agency may select transactions, employees, suppliers, training interventions and other supporting information for detailed testing.

The organisation may also be required to provide additional information or clarification in response to queries raised during the verification process.

This is where gaps or inconsistencies in the supporting evidence can become verification findings.

4. Finalisation of the Scorecard

Once the assessment has been completed, the B-BBEE Rating Agency finalises the scorecard and issues the B-BBEE Certificate and Verification Report.

The final outcome therefore depends not only on the initiatives undertaken by the organisation, but also on whether the relevant information and supporting evidence can substantiate the claims made on the scorecard.

Where Do Businesses Commonly Experience Challenges?

Many B-BBEE verification delays and point losses can be avoided with earlier preparation.

Common challenges include:

Common Challenge What This Can Mean During Verification
Incomplete or inconsistent supporting documentation Evidence may not adequately support the information submitted on the scorecard.
Evidence that does not align to the B-BBEE calculation Differences between calculations and supporting evidence may result in queries or findings.
Delays in submitting supporting documentation Missing information can delay the verification process.
Incorrect classification of B-BBEE transactions Transactions may not be reflected or classified correctly for verification purposes.
Changes in ownership, structures or financial information during the year Changes may need to be considered when preparing the information and supporting evidence for verification.

These challenges highlight the importance of preparing well before information is submitted to the B-BBEE Rating Agency.

What Should You Be Doing Now?

Do not wait for the B-BBEE Rating Agency to identify the gaps.

Organisations should ideally conduct a pre-verification review before submitting their information.

A pre-verification review provides an opportunity to:

  • Validate the scorecard.
  • Assess evidence requirements.
  • Identify potential risks.
  • Review supporting documentation.
  • Address gaps while there is still time to do so.

The objective is to ensure that the organisation’s calculations, supporting evidence and processes are aligned before entering the verification process.
