As of the 1st of April 2019, most SETAs require that companies submit the letter of intent two (2) months prior to the intended commencement of the learnership. If approved, a letter of acknowledgment will be granted by the SETA that prescribes the commencement date of the learnership.

For example, if you have a December year-end and are still to onboard new learners you should be starting this process NOW!

What is a letter of intent? A letter of intent is an application lodged with your SETA to implement learnerships. Prior to this update, a letter of intent could be submitted at any time before the commencement of the learnership. And the start date of the learnership could have be set by your company.
