How to Mine and Shine

A developing country like South Africa needs to benefit optimally from its R18-trillion mining endowment and also exploit its tourism potential to the full. To do that, those who mine must also shine, environmentally. South Africa has seen the Department of Environmental Affairs stop the mining of soft coking coal at Vele, in Limpopo, because of its potential impact on tourism at the Mapungubwe National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site. The 596 workers that the ASX-, Aim- and JSE-listed Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) retrenched when the project was stopped did not regain tourism employment, and were left jobless.

Sustainability - Just another Fad?

In South Africa we’re fortunately not dealing with a major oil spill, at least not directly. But we are dealing with widespread poverty (compounded over aeons) and its implications not only for society but also the impacts of development on the country’s resource base (that bringing people out of poverty requires)
