Davies gazettes B-BBEE Amendment Bill

The Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Amendment Bill, which aims to align the B-BBEE Act with other legislations impacting on B-BBEE and with the Codes, has been gazetted by the Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies, the Department of Trade and Industry reported on Friday.

A developing country like South Africa needs to benefit optimally from its R18-trillion mining endowment and also exploit its tourism potential to the full. To do that, those who mine must also shine, environmentally. South Africa has seen the Department of Environmental Affairs stop the mining of soft coking coal at Vele, in Limpopo, because of its potential impact on tourism at the Mapungubwe National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site. The 596 workers that the ASX-, Aim- and JSE-listed Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) retrenched when the project was stopped did not regain tourism employment, and were left jobless.
